A Gun Rights Activist Was Shot by Her 4-Year-Old Son

A Florida gun rights activist was shot in the back by her 4-year-old son on Tuesday; just the day before, she bragged that he "gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22." The 31-year-old, Jamie Gilt of Jacksonville, FL, was driving a truck and towing a horse trailer when her little boy, who was sitting in the back, discharged a .45-caliber handgun that had apparently been left near his seat. The bullet traveled through the driver's seat and into Gilt's abdomen, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Gilt partially pulled off of the highway and frantically hailed a passing sherriff's deputy before she was rushed to the hospital. On her now-deleted gun rights Facebook page, Jamie Gilt For Gun Sense, Gilt regularly posted memes defending firearm use and pro-Ted Cruz stories. "All of ours [kids] know how to shoot too. Even my 4-year-old gets jacked up to target shoot the .22," commented Jamie on a recent post.

At this time, the shooting is being treated as accidental, and it is unclear whether the child was strapped into his booster seat at the time of the shooting. The Florida Department of Children and Families was alerted by the Putnam County Sheriff's Department, who will work to determine how the child apprehended the gun and whether Gilt should be charged for any circumstances leading to her own shooting. Gilt is currently in stable condition and expected to survive.
