This Powerful Map Shows Where All the Hate Groups Are in America

The Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked hate groups in America since 1999 and recently published an interactive map of all the active hate groups in the country. After researching websites, group publications, law enforcement reports, field sources, and news reports, the SPLC found 892 active hate organizations in the United States as of 2015. The center defines a hate group as an organization with "beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people." According to its count, the number of hate groups rose by 14 percent between 2014 and 2015.

What's more, the country has seen a 42 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate groups in the United States over the same period of time. Given the rise of divisive anti-Muslim rhetoric, underlined by Donald Trump's call to ban Muslims from entering the country, it's not surprising that hate groups are forming in response to a perceived threat. SPLC's analysis explains:

"From start to finish, the year 2015 was remarkable for its terrorist violence, the penetration of the radical right and its conspiracy theories into mainstream politics, and the boost far-right ideas and groups received from pandering politicians like Donald Trump."

The map also shows each hate group's categorization, with the most popular group being the Ku Klux Klan with 190 chapters. After the KKK, the SPLC categorized the remaining as 184 general hate groups, 180 black separatists groups, 95 white nationalist groups, 95 racist skinhead groups, 94 neo-Nazi groups, 35 neo-Confederate groups, and 19 Christian-identified groups. Texas has the highest number of active hate groups with 84 organizations (54 of which are KKK chapters). While the number of hate groups rose after President Obama took office in 2009, they began to decline after 2011 — until last year.
