Watch Jon Stewart Explain the Hypocrisy of Describing All Trump Supporters as Racist

Jon Stewart sat down with CBS News's Charlie Rose to discuss his upcoming book, The Daily Show: An Oral History, but their conversation quickly turned to the election.

Stewart began the discussion by emphasizing how Donald Trump's election did not fundamentally change the country — meaning the problems facing America two weeks ago remain today. "The same country, with all its grace and flaws and volatility and insecurity and strength and resilience, exists today as it did two weeks ago," he said. "The same country that elected Donald Trump, elected Barack Obama." Stewart said Trump simply underlined the challenges and his election will intensify those anxieties for many people — particularly those whom he marginalized.

Stewart also questioned why neither liberals nor conservatives ever challenged Trump's slogan and asked him, "What makes America great?" Lastly, and most poignantly, Stewart said it's wrong to describe all Trump voters as racist. Explaining how liberal-leaning people avoid delineating entire groups of people in one way, or as a "monolith," Stewart points out the hypocrisy of doing the same to Trump voters and saying that "anyone who voted for him has to be defined by the worst of his rhetoric." (While it's important to avoid generalizations about groups of people, Trump's voters did overlook his vitriol at the very least.)

The interview ended with Stewart summarizing the great American democracy experiment in three simple words: "This ain't easy."
