Here's How to Host a Coffee Tasting Party Like a Pro

Put a spin on your next brunch or afternoon gathering and host a coffee party. It's a unique twist on a traditional wine tasting that lets guests sip different roasts and blends. I love the idea of keeping the featured beans a surprise until the end of the party and then sharing with a big reveal. Leaving out mini notepads adds to the fun by letting guests write down how they're feeling about the different types of coffee. Pair with sweet and savory snacks and you're ready to party.

Pick Your Beans

I wanted to see how well my coffee tasters knew their favorite roasts, so I went to my local grocery store and picked a variety of dark, medium, and light beans for my party. You can go with ground or whole-bean coffee for your gathering, but make sure to create some sort of labeling system so you know what everyone is drinking.

Prep Your Coffee

My featured coffee was Pike Place Roast from Starbucks, which I ground before brewing. When you're grinding your own coffee, you should determine how fine or coarse your coffee should be based on the brewing method of choice. Knowing the proper grind will ensure you have the most flavorful cup of coffee without any bitterness.

Set the Table

Create an easy-to-access spread with the coffee containers and carafes alongside cream, sugar, and pretty mugs. You want guests to be drawn to the main serving area and then feel comfortable to wander away and mingle.

Leave Out Notepads

Pick up mini notepads and pencils for guests to write down their thoughts on the different flavors they're discovering. They can also keep track of what type of blend they think is in each serving container — but it's complelty acceptable to write notes to other coffee-party sippers, too.

Pair With Food

Put out snacks that complement the different notes of the coffees, like sweet and tart raspberries, crisp crackers, and soft cheeses. Place nibbles on cheeseboards or serving platters that can be moved around while guests are enjoying the party.

Once guests arrive, invite everyone to start tasting. I had the Pike Place Roast in glass carafes, with the light roast in an unmarked carafe, and the medium in a carafe marked with a sticker on the bottom.

Mingle and Discuss

After everyone has had a chance to sip, savor, and chat, reveal the different blends and see who guessed them all correctly. Award the winner with a bag of your featured coffee for enjoying at home!
