The Powerful Meaning Behind That New Eye Emoji

In freaking out about the new taco and middle finger emoji, it was easy to overlook the other, seemingly mundane ones. One in particular though — an artful eye — actually holds a much greater, important meaning: it's a symbol for the I Am a Witness campaign for teen bullying prevention.

The emoji was developed by Apple and Ad Council to spread awareness about teen victims of online bullying. While the emoji looks like a regular eye doodle at first glance, it's actually a speech bubble with an eye at the center, and it is meant to inspire people to not only witness but take a stand against bullying. The campaign page on Ad Council explains, "They can post the Witness Emoji when they see hurtful comments, or send GIFs and stickers to show support for someone in need."
You can find it under the symbols section of your emoji:

While we're still squealing with excitement over the fun new emoji, this powerful design might just be our favorite.
