Emma Watson's New Movie Is Based on the True Story of a Terrifying Cult

Though Emma Watson wasn't there to walk the red carpet, her new film Colonia premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday. She stars as Lena, a young woman who joins a suspicious, cult-like community in order to rescue her abducted boyfriend (Daniel Brühl). Though the characters are fictional, the cult is based on Colonia Dignidad, a Chilean colony headed by Paul Schäfer, played by Michael Nyqvist in the film. Schäfer, who was exiled from Germany on child molestation charges before he founded the colony in 1961, infamously ruled the society with an iron fist. Torture, drugging, and abuse were rampant — so yes, this movie is going to be heavy. Stay tuned for a full trailer and a US release date.
