While the Academy Awards is a night meant to honor the film industry, music is still a huge part of the show. This year, the nominees in the best song category are nothing short of exceptional, including: Miguel, Common, Mary J. Blige, and Andra Day. Legendary R&B singer Blige, who wrote the song "Mighty River" for Mudbound, for which she's also nominated for best supporting actress, is now the first person ever to receive an acting and songwriting nomination within the same year.

"Mystery of Love," by Sufjan Stevens, from Call Me by Your Name
Sufjan Stevens is an indie-rock musician who actually contributed two songs to the Call Me by Your Name soundtrack. Another notable track by the musician is "Death With Dignity," which was featured in the pilot episode of This is Us.
"Mighty River" by Mary J. Blige, from Mudbound
The song, which is a rallying cry against racial division, is making Oscars history. Grammy award-winning singer Blige is the first person to ever be nominated for acting and original song in a single year.
"Remember Me (Dúo)" by Miguel featuring Natalia Lafourcade, from Coco
The bilingual song featuring Mexican singer Natalie Lafourcade comes from the Pixar animated film Coco, which starred Disney's first all-Latino cast.
"Stand Up For Something" by Andra Day featuring Common, from Marshall
"We’ve got to stand up for whatever it may be, whether it’s animal rights, the environment, women’s rights, and standing up against the injustices,” rapper Common said in reference to the song in an interview with Good Morning America in September.
"This Is Me" The Greatest Showman
"This is Me" has already snagged the Golden Globe award for the best song category. It's also a critical favorite and has been dubbed "an anthem for outcasts." The original song is by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are already Oscar and Tony winners for their work on La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen.
