Vice President Joe Biden has had his fair share of awkward moments captured on camera.
Who can forget that time a photograph of a lady biker seemingly sitting on his went viral? (If you still thought she was on his lap, she most definitely has her own chair.) And why does Biden always seem to get caught in the crosshairs of an overly affectionate photo?
Despite his gaffes, he's considered by many to be fun and lovable — not to mention an effective wingman to the president. Throughout his nearly eight years in office, Biden has championed the White House's initiative combatting sexual violence as the first-ever White House adviser on violence against women, introduced Lady Gaga's powerful performance with rape survivors at the Oscars this year, and led efforts to reduce gun violence and improve the lives of the middle class. Perhaps his biggest task was overseeing the distribution of the $840 billion stimulus package to reinvigorate America after the 2008 crash.
Of course, he's also faced criticism — like that time former Defense Secretary Robert Gates wrote in his book that Biden was "wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades." But Gates also said that Biden was "simply impossible not to like."
With that in mind, here are 20 memorable photos from his vice presidency and the occasional imagined thought running through his mind.
This photograph was taken as Biden watched his son Beau, who died of brain cancer last year, announce his vice presidential nomination.
