Does This Quick Chill-Beer Life Hack Really Work?

There's nothing like kicking back with friends and cracking a couple of beers — except when the drinks aren't frosty cold. We saw this quick-chill tip on Pinterest and had to give it a try. Popping a few brewskis in the freezer helps cool drinks down fast, but this life hack suggests wrapping bottles in wet paper towels for ice-cold beers in minutes. But does it work?

The Test

We put two room temperature beers in the freezer, one wrapped with a damp paper towel and the other as is for 15 minutes. Most cold brews are served around 42˚F, and we had high hopes this quick trick would work. The towel-wrapped drink appeared colder once removed from the fridge, but did this tip deliver icy-cold beer?

The Bummer

Sadly, both drinks were the same temperature after a quick freeze — and neither was much chillier than its original room temperature of 68˚F. The best bet? Nestle drinks together in an ice-filled chest, and brews will be cold in 20 to 30 minutes. If chilling beers in the freezer, make sure to set a timer reminder. Beers will explode upon freezing, resulting in a big unwanted mess.
