We often turn to YouTube personalities for quick hair and makeup demos, but it's truly special when beauty-lovers use their platforms to spread messages of self-acceptance and confidence.
Beauty vlogger Marimar Quiroa is one of these people. The 22-year-old makeup-lover and Zumba instructor was born with a cystic hygroma tumor in her neck and mouth. This has resulted in her using tubes to eat, sign language to communicate, and a hole in her throat to breathe.
In an exclusive interview with Barcroft TV, Marimar shared that she went through multiple surgeries as a child to reduce the size of her tumor, but that never stopped her from feeling beautiful. She revealed that growing up she would stand in the mirror and tell her reflection that it was beautiful. She would even list out her favorite personal qualities to continually build her confidence.
Combined with her admirable fearlessness, Marimar's love for makeup prompted her to create a YouTube channel, where she shares daily vlogs and beauty tutorials. Since joining YouTube in 2012, she's built a fan base of over 100,000 subscribers and has acquired over 9 million views of her beauty videos. Though nearly all of her followers admire her spirit and turn to her for advice, she's also encountered her fair share of bullies on YouTube and in her daily life. But in true boss fashion, Marimar simply brushes them off.
"To me, beauty means to accept yourself for who you are and to ignore what other people tell you," she explained. "It doesn't matter if you have a different-looking face . . . accept yourself for who you are." Though the makeup enthusiast is currently in her first year of beauty school, she hopes to one day become a teacher for deaf children. As she works to achieve her goals, she wants to continue showing the world that self-acceptance is the ultimate form of beauty.
