The Lazy Girl's Guide to Flawless, Foolproof Hair

There's a hair secret I need to spill — and it's not just that I'm long overdue for a trim. Hidden underneath my fairly thick, two-and-a-half-foot long locks, I'm really just a lazy girl. Or rather, I toggle between two very opposite styling extremes. On one hand, I find switching on a playlist and arming myself with a hot tool and hairspray a relaxing way to spend alone time. But on the other, the thought of slathering a million products on my locks post-shower or waking up early to style them feels like the worst kind of chore.

However, as the internet would agree, there's a loophole or list of hacks for everything. And with a little creative experimentation, I've figured out how to whip my hair into shape with almost no effort at all. Read on as I reveal essential, time-saving steps in my anti-hair-care routine.

Holy grail products are like good friends: reliable, supportive, and willing to go the extra mile without expecting anything in return. That's why, when you find ones that work, you better hold on to them for life.

Leading my holy grail lineup are Fekkai's Ironless shampoo and conditioner (available at Target!) that help keep my mane looking ultrasilky, sleek, and soft on the daily. I must admit, I can be pretty attached to my signature loose curls, but I'll do just about anything to avoid picking up a hot tool if I'm wearing my hair any other way. To help ensure I never have to, my go-to cleansing duo is formulated with an Anti-Frizz Straightening Complex for maximum smoothness, but zero of that inevitable freshly air-dried frizz. All I have to do is run a wide-toothed comb through them (another staple in my hair routine), and my strands are good to go — straight out of the shower.

If there's one good thing that came out of my embarrassing (though likely relatable) side-bangs phase in 2006, it's what I learned about haircuts. More specifically, I realized that bangs require a certain level of maintenance that I just can't get down with. Sure, they look great when you leave the salon, but soon enough they're awkwardly long and impossible to pin back, more unruly than the rest of your hair, and need to be retrimmed. Gah!

These days, I keep my hair pretty uniform, with a straight-across cut or layers so minimal, you can barely tell they're there. It not only takes the unpredictability out of styling — I know exactly how my hair will fall every day — but makes my trips to the salon more sporadic, since all I have to worry about are split ends. But this type of cut is specific to my lengthy, naturally straight strands, so it's all about finding a style that works for your hair type — and makes you feel confident. For short hair, that may be a blunt bob, while curly-haired girls may benefit from more significant layers to help reduce the density in their locks.

A girl's gotta get her beauty rest, but why not make the most out of all those extra hours? Overnight hairstyles are basically my secret weapon for cutting time and effort in my morning routine. Plus, if you favor night showers like me, they're kind of a no-brainer; they work especially well on damp hair! My personal go-to is a pair of french or two-strand rope braids. Not only do they keep my long locks contained while I sleep, but they reveal the perfect soft beachy waves when I release them in the morning.

But the options don't stop there — and some you may even be doing already. Like that topknot you sleep in? It's the perfect way to create volume without even trying. (Just be sure to swap your elastic hair tie with a scrunchie to avoid kinks!) And if you have texture, try getting creative with a series of frizz-taming styles, like several smaller braids, twists, or the like. The days of wasting valuable could-be-sleeping time in front of the mirror are over.
