The Pageant Circuit Can Be Grueling! 9 Ways Miss USA Contestants Relax

If you're unfamiliar with the process, it may come as a surprise to learn just how regimented and grueling the Miss USA pageant is for contestants. Sure, each woman is passionate about representing her state, reaching for that USA crown, and engaging with the community, but with those amazing perks comes a massive load of responsibilities and work. Not only are they mentally and physically preparing throughout the year, but those final two weeks of rehearsals leading up to the live competition also has them go-go-going for countless hours every day.

So if any group of people know how to treat themselves after that much work — be it at the end of the day, midweek, or following the crowning — it's Miss USA contestants. We asked a handful of the women about their favorite way to self-indulge, not counting the complimentary blowouts they get from the Chi Hair Care team (the official sponsors of the Miss Universe organization), because that's a given. Here's what they told us!

Miss Maine: Massages

"For me, my beauty indulgence would definitely be getting a massage," Miss Maine Marina Gray said. "I especially love getting a deep tissue massage. I hold a lot of my stress in my shoulder area, and feeling relaxed is when I feel the most beautiful."

Miss Louisiana: Massage

Miss Louisiana Lauren Vizza seconds Miss Maine on the massage front. "You know how you always feel like you need them, but you never actually go and get one done? It's always one of the last things that I'll splurge on for myself — like I'll never do it — but whenever I do it's like full-on indulgence. I fall asleep!"

Miss Utah: A Steam and Bubble Bath

Miss Utah: A Steam and Bubble Bath

Miss Utah Narine Ishhanov is all about treating her skin when it comes to a self-indulgent beauty moment. "On the stove, I will put a pot of hot water, and I'll turn the fire on and the steam comes out, and I like to steam my face a little bit," she told us. "Then I go and take a long bath with a lot of bath bombs. I love the rose one from Lush that when it's put in the water, the rose inside blooms. It's the best!"

Miss Maryland: Going Makeup-Free

Miss Maryland: Going Makeup-Free

When you're in makeup all the time, sometimes a #treatyourself moment involves wearing nothing at all on your face. "I love a good day off without makeup. Competing with Miss USA, I wear a lot of makeup. I mean, I love to play with makeup — I love to try new colors and formulas, and I'd never say I'm not somebody who is makeup-free, because I'm not. But if there's a day that I really just want to relax, I will wear nothing on my skin or my eyes," Miss Maryland Brittinay Nicolette told us backstage. "Maybe I'll do a moisturizing mask because I have a lot of dry skin, but for me, a good, refreshing no-makeup day once in a while feels like I'm pampering myself."

Miss Washington: Lash Extensions

Miss Washington: Lash Extensions

"I love getting eyelash extensions — just the singlets," Miss Washington Abigail Hill said. "I personally don't like to wear a lot of makeup, and now that it's Summer, I love to have a naked face all the time. I'm spending my days on the lake and on the boat, so having just a little bit of touch to the lash keeps things feminine and you're always kind of picture ready."

Miss Hawaii: Facials

Miss Hawaii: Facials

Everyone loves a pampering facial at the salon, including Miss Hawaii Julianne Chu. "I love facials. I love taking care of my skin, because I feel like wearing makeup for long periods of time just ends up clogging your pores, so I really like giving it a chance to breathe and open up again." And if you're ever in Hawaii, she highly recommends dropping by Pure Joy Day Spa, which was voted number one in Honolulu for the last five years.

Miss Delaware: Facials

Another vote for facials comes from Miss Delaware Sierra Wright, who's lucky enough to have a sponsor that specializes in them! "I have pretty good skin — I've been fortunate with that. But when I'm feeling stressed, I love to just relax, lay on the heated bed, and just have my face massaged. They make sure it's a good experience, and I love going."

Miss Colorado: Pedi

For Miss Colorado Chloe Brown, it's all about slipping into one of those oversize massage chairs at the salon for a luxurious pedicure. "I get my toes done every two weeks," she told us. "It's really relaxing for me." Same, girl!

Miss Oregon: Microdermabrasion

Miss Oregon: Microdermabrasion

"There's this type of facial called microdermabrasion, and I absolutely love that to clean out all my pores," Miss Oregon Toneata Morgan said. "I have such a busy schedule, so I hardly ever have time to actually get facials, but if I go a couple times a year, it will really make a difference. I believe that skin is just the most important thing, and nothing is better than nice, beautiful, clear skin."
