Update: Jourdan Rodrigue, the reporter in this story, recently apologized after a series of racist tweets she wrote a few years ago resurfaced in light of this story. "There is no excuse for these tweets and the sentiment behind them," she wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. "I am deeply sorry and apologize."

Original post: Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton made headlines this week after he made a sexist comment to a female reporter during a press conference on Wednesday. After The Charlotte Observer's Jourdan Rodrigue asked Cam if his teammate Devin Funchess's progress with his "routes" gives him enjoyment (the 6:35 mark), the 38-year-old smiled and said, "It's funny to hear a female talk about 'routes.' It's funny." After the press conference ended, Jourdan tweeted about her frustration over his response, writing, "I don't think it's 'funny' to be a female and talk about routes. I think it's my job."

Shortly after the backlash over his comments began, Panthers spokesperson Steven Drummond said Cam spoke to Jourdan after the press conference and "expressed regret" over what he said. Jourdan, however, denied that, saying in a statement, "I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments." NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy also spoke out about Cam's comments, saying they "are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league. They do not reflect the thinking of the league."
