Justin Bieber sat down for an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Wednesday, and it wasn't long before the host asked about his headline-making performance at the MTV VMAs this week; in case you missed it, Justin took the stage to sing his Summer jam "Where Are Ü Now" as well as his new single "What Do You Mean?" and sort of had an emotional breakdown at the end. It was definitely one of the most confusing moments of the night, but Justin revealed what triggered his tears, saying, "It was so overwhelming for me, everything . . . I missed some cues, so I was a little disappointed at that." He also admitted to being surprised by the level of support he got from the VMAs crowd: "Last time I was at an award show, I was booed," he said, referring to his unfortunate moment on stage at the Billboard Awards in 2013. "I've worked so hard at becoming the man I want to become."

The interview took an even more serious tone as Justin reflected on the past couple years of his life — which were, admittedly, not his best. "I just had a bunch of knuckleheads around me," he said, adding, "I went through a place of trying to figure it out. You have to test the waters . . . I just happened to be in the spotlight and in front of cameras all the time, and they caught all those moments."
