Courtney Love's Heartbreaking Message to Kurt Cobain: "What on Earth Were You Thinking?"

Courtney Love shared a pair of photos on Instagram last week in honor of her daughter Frances Bean Cobain's 23rd birthday. In the snaps, a tiny Frances is cradled in bed by her parents, Courtney and Kurt Cobain. Courtney captioned the first photo, "My greatest love and our precious Bean," and included a heartfelt message to the late Nirvana frontman in her second picture, writing, "Makes me feel so sad. Our baby is all grown up now. Jesus Kurt look at her face, what on earth were you thinking..⁉⁉ God I miss you, we all miss you #family #memories #turnbacktime #lovehim."

Kurt committed suicide in 1994, when Frances was just 2 years old. Since then, Courtney has drawn ire from the public and been at the center of rumors that she had a hand in his death or hoped to profit from it in some way. She and Frances, now a visual artist in LA, have had their rocky relationship moments — Frances went so far as to emancipate herself from her mother in 2009 — though it seems as though they have remained on good terms as of late.

Frances spoke candidly about her father for the first time in a recent Rolling Stone interview around the time that a Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck, was made for HBO. "Kurt got to the point where he eventually had to sacrifice every bit of who he was to his art, because the world demanded it of him," she said, adding, "I think that was one of the main triggers as to why he felt he didn't want to be here and everyone would be happier without him." She went on: "But in reality, if he had lived, I would have had a dad. And that would have been an incredible experience."
