Elton John Slams "Distorted and Malicious" Stories About Harry and Meghan’s Recent Getaway

On Monday morning, the British press was plastered with photographs of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their son Archie traveling to the south of France last week. Harry and Meghan were publicly lambasted not only for their alleged use of public funds, but also the extra carbon emissions that resulted from them eschewing commercial flights in favor of a private jet, only a couple of weeks after they allegedly did the same for a trip to Ibiza for Meghan's birthday.

However, Sir Elton John has come to the couple's defense with a truly damning statement that reveals that, in fact, he was behind this royal trip. "After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home," Elton explained on Instagram, sharing a sweet photo of the royal couple meeting children in New Zealand last year. He goes on to clarify that not only did he pay for the flights (meaning this vacation did not come from the pocket of the British taxpayer), but he also made a donation to offset the carbon footprint of the journey.

"Prince Harry's Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana's untimely death." Elton wrote in his statement. "To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight. To support Prince Harry's commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint."

It's not the first time allegations of "irresponsible" spending have been leveled at the royal couple (and Meghan in particular). When the duchess traveled to NYC for her baby shower, she came under fire for the extravagant expense involved, even though it's been widely reported that her close friend Serena Williams footed the bill, though the tennis ace never confirmed this.

Elton, however, has no such qualms, and ended his message with a harsh call to the press "to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis."
