On Dec. 8, the artist suffered a medical emergency in a terminal at Chicago's Midway International Airport after a flight from Los Angeles. According to the Chicago Police Department, he was "taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was pronounced dead." Natalia Derevyanny, director of communications for the Cook County medical examiner's office, told Billboard, "The medical examiner's office has been notified of the death of Jarad A. Higgins. . . . The autopsy has not been performed at this time."

The Chicago native garnered widespread praise for his 2018 single "Lucid Dreams," which received Billboard Music Awards nominations for top rap song and top streaming song, as well as an MTV Video Music Awards nod for song of the summer. He released his debut studio album, Goodbye & Good Riddance, in 2018, followed by his second LP, Death Race For Love, which dropped in March. The latter quickly climbed the Billboard 200 record chart and eventually hit No. 1.
