Shay Mitchell and Matte Babel Are Expecting Their Second Child

Shay Mitchell is pregnant! The actor and entrepreneur announced on Feb. 7 that she's expecting her second child with Matte Babel, her boyfriend of five years. Mitchell described the news as bittersweet, as her grandmother had passed away just a week prior. "Saying goodbye to a loved one while simultaneously experiencing the joy of welcoming another into this world is the great cycle of life," Mitchell wrote on Instagram. "It is also my most challenging season to date."

Sharing intimate photos of her pregnant belly captured by photographer Amber Asaly, Mitchell added, "I can't help but think this was the universe's plan all along, knowing I would need other worldly joy to cushion the blow of losing one of the most important people in my life. Yet, this is proof that love, life and loss can profoundly exist all at the same time. Gram, I miss you every day. Little one, we are so excited to meet you. I breathe a sigh of peace knowing you two are already connected in such a cosmic way."

Mitchell and Babel welcomed their first child, Atlas Noa, in October 2019. "I had no idea I was capable of loving anything like this before you arrive," Mitchell wrote on Instagram following her daughter's birth. "You wonder if that's just something people say, but it's as if the chemical makeup of my entire body and soul changed the minute we met."

In addition to opening up about her prenatal depression, Mitchell also publicly shared her experience with pregnancy loss in 2018. She wrote at the time, "We need to remember that we are all on this journey together — in good times and in bad — and to remind ourselves that we seldom really know or understand the struggles and hardships that other people are going through."
