7 Things That Will Make You Want to Binge-Watch Marvel's Jessica Jones

Daredevil is great and all, but if you've been thinking that Hell's Kitchen could use a woman's touch, you're in luck. Season one of Marvel's latest series, Jessica Jones, premieres this week on Netflix, and there's a lot we already know about it. Whether you're excited about the show or you're not even sure what it is, this is a good primer for who is starring, what it's about, and when you can catch it. Take a look!

The Cast

Krysten Ritter is taking on the titular role of Jessica Jones, a former superheroine who decides to hang up her cape and become a private investigator. Rachael Taylor (666 Park Avenue) is starring as Trish Walker, Jessica's best friend, while Carrie-Anne Moss is playing Jeri Hogarth (a male character in the comics), a high-powered lawyer who eventually becomes the manager of Heroes for Hire. The fun doesn't stop there! Keep scrolling to see who else is in the cast.

The Villain

The Villain

David Tennant (formerly known as Doctor Who) is playing Jessica's first big nemesis: Kilgrave. Known in the comics as the Purple Man, this supervillain's power allows him to verbally control other people. In the comics, Kilgrave kidnaps Jessica when she's a superhero (her name is Jewel back then) and forces her to help him with his evil schemes. We don't know how closely the Netflix series will follow their history from the comics, but all this supposedly goes down before she becomes a private eye.

The Love Interest

Mike Colter (The Good Wife) is playing Luke Cage, a fellow superhero who will eventually be getting his own Netflix series. For now, he's starring alongside Jessica as her love interest. According to producer Jeph Loeb, Jessica Jones finds Luke in "the early part of the middle" of his storyline. Thanks to a New York Comic-Con screening, we also know that Luke and Jessica share a shockingly sexy scene in the premiere.

The Controversial Sex Scenes

You want to know more about that sex scene, don't you? Vulture reported from New York Comic-Con that Jessica runs into Luke at his bar, and after some serious flirtation, they end up doing it doggy style. It's definitely the most explicit any Marvel property has gotten about sex, and it's not the only sexually charged part of the show. Moss's version of Jeri is a lesbian — the first lesbian to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and she's fooling around on her partner with a side piece. There's also a brief moment between Jessica and Trish that implies that they might have been more than friends in the past.

The Crossover Potential
Netflix

The Crossover Potential

Jessica Jones is Netflix's second Marvel series. It will be followed by Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. The last one would be a giant crossover series, similar to The Avengers. While Jessica doesn't appear in Daredevil's first season, Loeb hasn't ruled out the possibility of crossovers: "Without giving anything away, they're in the same area. In some cases they are in the same neighborhood. One of the things that is important to us is, when you enter the police station, it's the same police station. When you go to the hospital, you start to see the same people. [But] we don't want people suddenly going, 'Wait, is that Matt Murdoch that's walking down the street?' Because that's going to feel odd, and in a weird way feel false."
