The Vampire Diaries PaleyFest 2014 Panel

4 Burning Questions About The Vampire Diaries, Answered by the Cast

The Vampire Diaries cast was the latest ensemble to hit PaleyFest in LA this weekend, and Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and Nina Dobrev joined executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries to chat about the show. They tried not to spill too much about what's coming up for the rest of the season, but they did loosen up a little to answer some important questions that have probably been plaguing most Vampire Diaries fans.

What's Going on With Damon and Elena's Relationship?

Plec said that currently, Damon and Elena "recognize the elements of the codependency of their relationship," and "they need to have legit adult conversations." Somerhalder added, "When you have grown-up conversations, you have to put your big boy pants and big girl pants on," and then he cheekily added a caveat: "They keep taking their pants off, and that's what gets in the way of the grown-up conversations." Somerhalder only gave us this nugget regarding the future: "It is what it is. Eventually it'll be . . . who knows?" Do with that what you will.

Did Katherine Really Go to Hell?

Plec admitted that Katherine's fate is one of the few times that the writers have left it up to the viewer's imagination. "Damon says, 'See ya in hell,'" but it's still up to the viewer to ask, 'Is that really what happened?' Dries said the writers "don't use heaven and hell and religion on the show," but "I thought it was pretty obvious it was hell." Fun fact: if the church looked familiar, you probably watch The Originals, because the set was borrowed from their sister series.

Is There Any Hope For Caroline and Klaus?

He may be over on The Originals, but fans are still rooting for Caroline and Klaus. Is it still a possibility, despite the rift? Plec didn't give us too much hope when she said, "Happiness isn't a drama magnet . . . If they were still on the same show, they may have found a way to be together — and then ripped apart." She went on to note that we shouldn't expect Caroline to make the leap to The Originals, stating, "I feel like Caroline Forbes is such a crucial element on The Vampire Diaries" that "taking her off that show would be very damaging to the show." Besides, she added, "Klaus has sh*t to do," and when she did say the semihopeful "it's not never say never, it's . . . " Somerhalder finished her sentence with "we have Caroline! Caroline's staying with us!"

Will Stefan and Caroline Get Together?

Since Caroline clearly isn't going anywhere, what about a Caroline/Stefan relationship? "They're pretty cute together, aren't they?" Somerhalder chimed in. Plec had this to say: "She and Stefan have a lot to do together in the next couple episodes," but she didn't get more specific. Wesley gave us more hope when he confirmed that he was rooting for the pairing. "Yeah, yeah, yeah," he said, joking, "I'm friends with Candace's fiancé, [and] he might punch me in the face, but other than that . . . " Good enough for us!
