The Casting For Spotlight's Real Journalists Is Surprisingly Uncanny

The movie Spotlight comes out this week, shedding — yes, a spotlight — on the group of real journalists whose investigation into the Catholic church's hiding of molestation scandals broke open decades of silence. The stars who portray the Boston Globe reporters, including Rachel McAdams and Mark Ruffalo, are in the rare position of actually resembling their subjects a great deal (in addition to all giving quietly excellent performances). Since the movie will no doubt make you curious about the real people, we've rounded up pictures of them posing with the actors who play them, along with some details about them now. Check out the real reporters and then find out why this movie's getting Oscar buzz.

The lone female member of the Spotlight team is originally from Ohio and joined the Boston Globe in 1995. She was asked by Walter Robinson (played by Michael Keaton in the movie) to join the team, which would win the Pulitzer in 2003 for its investigation into the sexual abuse of the Catholic church's clergy. Pfeiffer is currently a columnist at the Globe, was a host of All Things Considered for NPR in Boston and cowrote the book Betrayal: The Crisis in the Catholic Church.

Mad Men star John Slattery portrays the Globe editor who oversees the work of the Spotlight team. Bradlee himself has had journalism in his blood his whole life; his father is Ben Bradlee, who was the executive editor of The Washington Post during the Watergate scandal. After the events in Spotlight, Bradlee left the newspaper to write a biography about famed baseball player Ted Williams, titled The Kid: The Immortal Life of Ted Williams.
