How to Get Away With Murder Is Raising the Stakes For Season 3

Last season of How to Get Away With Murder was a real mind-melt. As you might recall, the season two finale left us all in a glass case of emotion: we had to deal with Caleb's suicide — since, you know, he's the one who killed his parents — plus the death of Wes's father and a missing Frank. Given the details we've gotten about season three, premiering Thursday, it looks like the madness has only just begun. Here's what we know.

The Biggest Mystery Yet

During the Television Critics' Association press tour, executive producer Pete Nowalk teased the show's next big brain-melting twist. "There's going to be a new mystery and you're not going to have to wait long to find out what that is," he revealed. "The first domino was Lila getting killed, so it all stems from there. A leads to B leads to C, and I think we're probably at D at this point and it's going to be the biggest one yet."

Viola Davis, who plays Annalise Keating, teased the mystery further to E! Online, saying, "A mystery is going to be revealed in the first episode that is so big and so unbelievable, I just think it's going to cost everyone something."

Executive producer Pete Nowalk revealed season three will have this defunct group of law students going back to school. "Obviously these are kids who came to law school. Things happened. We are going to find them in their second year of law school now and they have to basically pick up the pieces and get their sh*t together and move on with their lives."

In an interview with Deadline, Davis shed even more light on HTGAWM's next mystery . . . which no one in the cast can seem to puzzle out. "We cannot figure [it] out on the set. I mean, last year we could figure it out; we actually did. We got together and figured it out. This year, we're totally stumped." Looks like even if we do our own detective work, the chances of guessing it are slim to none.

During a separate chat with E!, Davis stated that the past is not totally in the past. She revealed that there will be "some flashbacks" in season three.

In the wake of season two, Conrad Ricamora was promoted to series regular as Oliver, Connor's computer-wiz boyfriend. Looks like we'll see a lot more hacking and other barely legal activities in the episodes to come.

According to an exclusive report from TV Line, Dexter alum Lauren Vélez has joined the cast. She'll be playing the president of Middleton University, where Annalise Keating is a professor.

The Emotional Status of Wes

Entertainment Weekly reports that the death of Wes's father will be quickly addressed. Nowalk said, "The instant aftermath is Wes is standing there in his father's blood . . . We will answer a very important question right when we pick up in the show and then we will move past it. I think the question is what happens in the immediate aftermath of Wes telling this man, 'I think I'm your son,' and him getting shot while the man is on the phone? It's basically what will happen to Wes in those instant moments and there might be some reveal within that."
