10 Hints, Mysteries, and Clues From Scream Queens Season 2

The second season of Scream Queens has arrived, and even after such a short amount of time, there's still so much to unpack. This time around, there's already a new mystery surrounding yet another unidentified baby. And, of course, there's a new killer on the loose that has our paranoia at an all-time high. With all that going on, it's easy to miss a few of the other clues and hints that have been sprinkled through what we've seen so far. Let's unpack them, shall we?

The Details of the Very First Flashback

The flashback takes us back to 1985, on Halloween night. The rest of the events take place in 2016, according to another title card. This means 31 years have passed since that night. The baby in that woman's belly would logically be this age (since she was quite pregnant during the scene), and she and the rest of the players in that sequence would be much older. We're talking 50s and 60s, depending on their various ages.

The Initial Location, as Depicted in the Past

The hospital in the flashback is called Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering. Kind of oddly fitting, if you ask us. There's a gross, vile swamp in the back of the building. We also know it was first opened as a tuberculosis clinic.

The C.U.R.E. Institute, or the Present Day Iteration of the Hospital

If you didn't notice, the C.U.R.E. Institute is, in fact, the same building that housed Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering. It might be hard to make it out, but if you compare the windows in both shots, it looks exactly the same. That means the "swamp" is still somewhere on the property. Maybe it was filled in, maybe a new wing of the hospital was built on top of it, but it's there.

The Unknown Fate of the Pregnant Woman in the Flashback

We don't know a lot about this woman. They never say her name in the premiere (although it seems to be Jane, based on the credits), and we only know her husband's name is Bill. She does offer a threat, should anything happen to her husband: "I swear, I will make you all lose your medical licenses. I will shut this hospital down."

We also know that the baby she's having with Bill is male, or at least was born male. (Hey, we don't want to make any assumptions.) Bill says, "How's our son doing?" just before he goes under for his procedure.

So, who could the pregnant woman be? Initial and obvious guesses would be Dean Munsch or Nurse Hoffel. They both seem to be around that age, and they both seem to have something sinister up their sleeves.

Cathy Munsch and I.M. Hoffel Seem to Know Each Other

There's a interesting moment near the end, where Munsch and Hoffel seem to be in cahoots on something bad. "Keep riding them," Munsch says, "I've got plans for them." After Munsch walks away, Hoffel says, "So do I." Clearly there's some backstory we're not getting.

And let's talk more about Dr. Dean Cathy Munsch! Earlier on, she says something peculiar to Zayday: "Let's just say I have a very personal, deep-seated reason for wanting to see this hospital succeed. And whether or not you choose to believe it, I see you as being an integral part of its success." We have to remember that Munsch offers to cover med school expenses for Zayday and all the other Chanels. But what's her big plan?

Well, it might be to murder them, to finish the job Hester started. When the Chanels first meet Hoffel, she makes an offhand comment that seems a little too on-the-nose. "I have no idea why Munsch asked you here," she says, "but it must have been to kill you." Well, damn.

The Strange Behavior of Dr. Brock Holt's Transplanted Hand
Fox

The Strange Behavior of Dr. Brock Holt's Transplanted Hand

At first, it seems a little random. He just slams his hand around on random surfaces, seeming to have conjured his anger out of nowhere. When he's speaking with Chanel, though, his hand creeps up and his fingers wrap around her neck. It's almost unbeknownst to him, an observation he confirms when he glances down, grabs his own hand with his other hand, and slams it on the table. Who did the hand come from?! Could it be important?!

The Strange Secret of Dr. Cassidy Cascade
Fox

The Strange Secret of Dr. Cassidy Cascade

You might think it was merely a Twilight reference, and hey, maybe you're right. But, well, maybe you're wrong. Maybe there's a reason for Cascade's cold demeanor. Is there a chance he's, say, 31 years old? Could he be the baby in the belly at the beginning? Is there a reason to his chilly rhyme? Could be.

The Special Significance of Dr. Brock Holt's Back Tattoo
Fox

The Special Significance of Dr. Brock Holt's Back Tattoo

It looks like a nod to Holt's college experience. He says he went to Harvard, multiple times. Could it simply be a Harvard coat of arms, or is there something else to it?

Chanel Number 5's Perceived Recognition
Fox

Chanel Number 5's Perceived Recognition

That's the most interesting part about this scene. The rest of the girls — Chanel, Chanel Number 3, and Zayday Williams — seem to be in awe of Dr. Holt. But Chanel Number 5 seems totally perplexed. We see this face just before we catch the flash of Holt's tattoo. Maybe they share a history.

The Uncanniness of the "Green Meanie, " This Season's Killer
Fox

The Uncanniness of the "Green Meanie, " This Season's Killer

In the flashback, the nurse makes a cursory mention of the Green Meanie, a monster who used to haunt the swamp on the hospital grounds. Given last season's Red Devil, we have to say the costume looks pretty familiar. It's the same long cape, and the same strange armor, just a different mask and color scheme. It could mean the Green Meanie is following in the footsteps of last season's killer. Then again, the costume appears all the way back in 1985, when all of these events were seemingly set into motion. We can theorize about this season's killer all we want, but at this point, everyone's a suspect.
