Can We Talk About How Scary the Suite Life of Zack & Cody Halloween Episode Was?

When it comes to scary movies, I have a very low tolerance. While all of my friends were watching horror hits like Saw and The Ring, I was sitting safely at home watching the Disney Channel. Even though shows like The Suite Life of Zack & Cody brought me a lot of laughs during my childhood (not to mention jump-started my longtime crushes on Cole and Dylan Sprouse), there was one episode in particular that left me completely scarred.

If you watched the hit series when you were younger, you probably have a good idea of what I'm getting at. Yes, the dreaded Halloween-themed episode, "The Ghost of Suite 613." The storyline of a haunted hotel room was enough to spook out 13-year-old me (like I said, I have a very low scare tolerance), but the scene where Esteban gets possessed really sent me over the edge. Now that it's October, it feels like the perfect opportunity to relive my childhood nightmares and recall the best (or should I say worst?) moments of the episode. And if you're brave enough, you can now rewatch the episode on Disney Channel's YouTube account.

The Story of Suite 613

So, basically, the gist of story is that there was once a rich and beautiful young woman named Irene (though not as rich and beautiful as London, of course) who checked into suite 613 with her husband after their wedding. However, their honeymoon was cut short when he was sent off to World War II. Irene waited for almost three years before finding out her husband had actually met an Italian woman and opened a pizza parlor. In her jealous rage, Irene threw her silver hairbrush that he had gifted her into the mirror, which resulted in her own death by one of the shards.

Zack and Cody Check Out the Haunted Suite For Themselves

After hearing the spooky ghost story, the kids decide it would be a great idea to check it out for themselves. Spoiler: it's not. Cody is scared of everything (aka me) and practically jumps into Maddie's arms out of fear when Arwin walks into the dimly lit room.

To prove once and for all that the haunted room is just a bunch of nonsense, Arwin busts out his own personal invention to see if there is any paranormal activity. THERE IS. As the detector lights up in front of the painting of Irene, her face suddenly moves and gives Arwin a very stern look. Cue more screaming.

Following their creepy encounter, the kids decide to talk with Irene by performing a good old-fashioned seance. Why, though? The spirit winds up taking over Esteban's body, and that's where things get really weird.

The Group Gets Taken Away by the Spirit, One by One

After Maddie gets testy with Irene, the spirit decides to drag people away from the table and into the darkness, one by one. First Maddie for her love of pizza, then Cody when he accidentally says "pizza," and finally London when she insists the ghost give her back the money she stole from her purse. Zack, who has been enjoying all the fun thus far, finally starts to panic when he is the last one standing. Er, sitting.

The Group Reveals It Was an Elaborate Prank to Scare Zack

After Zack has the daylights scared out of him by a dancing skeleton, a creepy spider, and four ghosts, Maddie, London, Arwin, and Cody pull off their sheets and reveal that the whole thing has been an elaborate scheme to get back at him for scaring Cody all the time. Real funny, guys.

Or Was It Actually Real?

Just when you think you have everything figured out, Irene comes back to haunt your nightmares. After the twins go back to the room to find Cody's blanket, they are met by a strange woman with the ability to fade through walls. Nope, nope, nope. Was it all an elaborate scheme by Mr. Moseby, or is there really a ghost living in suite 613? The world may never know, and frankly I don't want to, either.
