When Juliana and Hannah decided to take a 23andMe test to learn more about their health and ancestry, they had no idea what else they'd discover. Sisters, born 15 months apart in Nanning, China, Juliana and Hannah were adopted by two different American families, with no knowledge of the other one having ever existed.

Not only did the results of their individual genetic tests tell them about their heritage, but it told them about each other! "My parents were very supportive of the idea of me taking the DNA test, but they made sure that I thought I was secure enough with my adoption first," Hannah, 19, tells POPSUGAR. "I did not go into 23andMe looking for DNA relatives."

23andMe has a DNA Relatives tool that compares users' DNA with the DNA of other 23andMe members. When two people are found to have an identical DNA segment, they likely share common ancestors. While Hannah was caught by surprise by the findings, Juliana admits she had a hunch. "I had assumed there was a good chance that I did have biological siblings; however, I never considered that they would be put up for adoption or I'd be able to MEET them," she tells us.

"I did not go into 23andMe looking for DNA relatives."

From there, they connected online and eventually met last year in real life. "I feel kind of bad because [Juliana] originally messaged me on 23andMe, but I didn't respond to her on there because I stopped checking," Hannah admits. "I am so thankful that she reached out to me and wanted to connect. I don't think we would've connected as soon as we did if she didn't find me on Facebook. The first time we FaceTimed was when we stared at each other and discussed our similar features. To my surprise, we both don't know how to ride bikes, and we're both terrible at math."

Read on to see what their experience was like meeting each other in real life for the first time.

Meeting for the first time in New York

Hannah tells POPSUGAR about meeting her sister for the first time: "We went to lunch. We talked about growing up and asked each other some questions. The first time we FaceTimed we stared at each other and discussed our similar features. To my surprise, we both don't know how to ride bikes, and we're both terrible at math. We have similar mannerisms, and I personally think we sound pretty similar."
