This Video of a Cheerleader Asking a Boy With Autism to Prom Will Give You Faith in Millennials

Mikal Bartosik had already been to prom twice before, so for her senior year, she wanted it to be different — something special.

Despite some friends and family questioning her decision, the Park Vista High School cheerleader knew exactly who she wanted to be her date for the April dance. In a video that captures Mikal's promposal, the Florida teen can be seen handing her friend a box with balloons. When Jonathan, an 18-year-old student who has autism, read the cookie cake that said, "Will you go to the prom with me?" he can hardly control his excitement — and we can barely contain ours.

"It was like something you see in movies," said Jeanne Ladner, the high school's speech pathologist and cheerleading coach. "I cried."

Mikal started spending lunches with Jonathan, who goes by JMR, and other students from his special-education class long before she decided to ask him to the prom. After she realized not only how badly JMR wanted to attend the dance, but also that none of Park Vista's special-education students attended last year's prom, she became determined to execute her plan.

"Personally, I think this is going to be the most special prom for me because I'll be making someone else happy," said Mikal.
