The Devastating Way This Girl Was Impaled at the School Gymnasium

Children get hurt and have accidents all of the time — especially when playing sports — but one Wisconsin student ended up with an injury that most have never witnessed before.

During a local basketball tournament, a 14-year-old Wisconsin girl ended up impaled by the floor. The high school student ran under the basket and slid when she fell. She came to a startling halt before asking the referee for help.

The tournament's coordinator, Perry Hibner, said that a piece of wood broke in the middle and caused splinters to push into the student's stomach. While he has been present at over 2,000 games, he has never seen an accident like this.

"It was 3 to 4 inches long and in some parts, maybe a quarter- to a half-inch deep," said Hibner.

The girl was taken to American Family Children's Hospital where Hibner says she spent the night and underwent an operation. "They did some exploratory surgery to see if there were any perforations internally and there weren't," added Hibner.

According to Hibner, the floor was installed only 15 years ago, which makes it a newer court, and he is confident that this was just a freak accident. The tournament finished on other courts at the field house, and the court from the accident is back in use. The broken board is temporarily glued and marked with tape as well as two garbage cans as children continue to play.

The eighth grader is expected to return to play in the near future, but parents may want to double-check that there are no cracks or splinting boards before each game starts.
