These Disney Princess-Inspired Wedding Gowns Are Stunning, but 1 Is Causing Some Controversy

Even though we're well past childhood, we'll never stop obsessing over Disney princesses or their signature looks. Thankfully, we're not alone. Alfred Angelo continues to be inspired by the iconic characters as well and released another Disney Fairy Tale Weddings collection for Spring 2017. Looking at the runway, it's easy to point out who inspired each design, as the details and overall vibe make it pretty clear. But according to Cosmopolitan, there's something, well, a lot of things, off about the Mulan-inspired dress. It's nothing like what Mulan wears in the movie and even happens to be historically inaccurate.

While the cartoon warrior princess is known for her hanfu, Alfred Angelo's design includes a mandarin collar — aka a style that was popularized more than a thousand years after the real Mulan lived. Then, in photos released by the brand, "Mulan" is pictured with an umbrella, echoing a part of the film where she reveals she doesn't feel at all like herself. ("Reflection," anyone?) It's stereotypical and could be viewed as insulting to many.

Regardless of all this, the designs are still stunning and definitely worth a scroll. Then be sure to check out the looks Disney ladies would wear right off the Fall '17 runways.

The Chinese influence is clear, but historically it's wrong. As Cosmopolitan pointed out, the real-life Mulan lived over a thousand years before this style was popularized and didn't wear anything like it in the movie.
