This Is Exactly What You'll Find in Kate Middleton's Wardrobe

For many women in the public eye, having a good selection of trusted go-to items in their wardrobe is imperative. Knowing they can throw together a look which is stylish, comfortable, and suitable for the occasion using a few key pieces means they have more time for the other things going on in their lives. The Duchess of Cambridge is currently increasing her royal duties as she juggles young children at home, so she has over the past few years developed a collection of individual style items that effortlessly make up her signature look. We break it down here . . .

Office Dresses

Slimming — but not TOO slimming — high-necked, knee-length dresses made up the bulk of Kate's working wardrobe when she became a member of the royal family. High Street bargains from Reiss and L.K.Bennett and designer numbers from Catherine Walker, Roksanda Ilincic, and Roland Mouret have all created a polished and professional businesswoman look.

Clutch Bags

No dangling straps or bulging bags for Kate — it's all about the sleek, inscrutable box clutch. She has them in all the colors of the rainbow, but her most used are in go-with-everything tan, cream, chocolate, black, and navy, while her favorite labels are L.K.Bennett, Stuart Weitzman, Jenny Packham, and Alexander McQueen. Now if only we knew what she kept in them . . .

Blazers

Need to smarten up breton stripes or add a bit of power to a pussy-bow blouse? Chuck on a blazer! Kate's frequently worn this navy number by Smythe.

Sparkle

Whether it's a show-stopping red carpet gown, a flash of glittery Jimmy Choo Vamp sandals or even a touch of glitz in the belt of her Alexander McQueen evening wedding dress, Kate loves a little razzle-dazzle — as seen recently on this Erdem gown.

Tall Wedges

It doesn't matter whether she's running on the beach, playing football, or jumping around on the grass — Kate will strap on her wedges and she's good to go for any smart-casual occasion. Her favorites are by Stuart Weitzman, but she also wears Dune and Pied a Terre.

Apricot Tara Jarmon, emerald Hobbs, fuchsia Mulberry, scarlet Carolina Herrera, plum Séraphine, and sapphire Reiss — Kate's coats of many colors are an important part of her look. And more importantly, it doesn't really matter what you're wearing underneath — just fasten the buttons and you're done!

Pearls

Pearls

No royal jewel box would be complete without a classic pair of pearl earrings, and Kate is no exception. Her go-to favorites are her Annoushka drops, but she added four new pairs of pearl earrings to her jewelry box last year by Balenciaga, Robinson Pelham, Soru, and Oscar de la Renta. Pearls have been featured on the buttons of Kate's outfits, and she has even been known to have them woven through her hair, sporting pearl-headed bobby pins in her chignon when she was on tour in Kuala Lumpur.

Bow Detailing

Kate uses bows as a way of prettifying an otherwise sensible or mature outfit. They pop up on many of her hats, all of her Cornelia James gloves, several of her clutch bags, and even on her L.K.Bennett Agata sandals.

These are a recent addition to Kate's look. In 2016, the duchess wore several '70s-style boho dresses including this floral print from L.K.Bennett, a green and pink Anita Dongre in India, a white lace Dolce and Gabanna at Ascot, a poppy-print Alexander McQueen for an event at Buckingham Palace, and a red and green Vanessa Seward festive print for a charity Christmas party.

When we think of dressing down, Kate it is ALL about the skinnies. Black, blue, khaki, cobalt, and coral — the duchess has a pair of her favored Zara or J.Brand for any occasion. They can be dressed up with heels and blouses or dressed down with flats and sweaters — either way, Kate has found her jean style and she's sticking with it.

Dated but dignified, they are the item that has divided style commentators, but Kate's pantyhose have been part of her daytime look from day one. It's said that her brand of choice is Philippe Matignon in Jade Sheer 20 Denier.

Kate is reported to be 5'7" tall, but she's not afraid to make herself even taller and is never seen at a formal event without a pair of towering heels. Her nude L.K.Bennett Sledges were an early trademark, but she also favors Prada, Rupert Sanderson, Gianvito Rossi, and Emmy London.

Breton Stripes

Breton Stripes

Smart, preppy, stylish, and timeless, the duchess has proved that breton stripes are perfect for sailing . . . and polo . . . and sporty engagements, and well, basically everything. The duchess has three different breton-striped tops that she has worn in public on many, many occasions.

Skirt Suits

Along with the office dresses, another grown-up lady staple of the duchess's wardrobe is the timeless skirt suit. Her Luisa Spagnoli red suit and Rebecca Taylor blue tweed two-piece are in regular rotation, and this year alone she has also worn her burgundy Paule Ka and her purple Oscar de la Renta.

Cocktail Hats

Elegantly perched and perfectly plumed — oh, how we'd love to be let loose with Kate's millinery for a few hours . . . Her favorite hat-maker is Jane Taylor, with plenty of back up from Lock & Co.

Lace

Lace

Timelessly elegant and occasionally adding a more racy element, Kate has always loved lace, so it was no surprise that it featured so prominently in her wedding dress. As well as for a visit to the Somme last year, she has worn it in teal, red, and gray on her Jenny Packham evening gowns, and black, white, blush, cream, eggplant, navy, and mint for daytime formal.
