Why Mindy Lahiri Should Be Every Girl's Style Icon

Anyone who's ever watched The Mindy Project knows that it has seen its fair share of A+ fashion — which made it all the more heartbreaking when we heard that the show was cancelled. But now, our favorite binge-watch-worthy series has been picked up by Hulu, and our imaginary BFF and her killer wardrobe are safe. We couldn't be happier: the mixed prints, bright colors, and flattering designs that Mindy rocks are enough to make any fashion girl swoon, and by now we've grown to admire the one man who is the driving force behind it all, costume designer Salvador Perez.

He's the guy who brings our favorite character to life in every episode, transforming Mindy Kaling into Mindy Lahiri, the way-too-relatable real girl we've all grown to love. So we tapped him for answers to some of our most pressing clothing-related questions, from adding accessories to shopping plus-size pieces. Let him tell you, in his own words, why Mindy should be every girl's style icon.

She's Not Afraid of Sporting Bright Colors

Mindy's Style: Put her in blue, red, green, or turquoise, and Mindy will rock the heck out of it. She never backs down from color and rarely sports your typical black, gray, or navy.

SP's Tip: "I think mixing in bits of color into your wardrobe is not reaching for the black sweater, but adding a turquoise sweater. It's probably easier to buy the blacks or the navies so it all matches, but once you have that color, it just makes life a little bit more fun. How can you be in a bad mood if you are wearing pink or yellow or blue?”

She's Built Like a Real Woman

Mindy's Style: Dr. Lahiri is not shy about her size — she's not built like a stick, nor does she really want to be that way. She wears flattering clothes and has the confidence of "Beyoncé Pad Thai."

SP's Tip: "Looking at the financial aspect of it, [designers] would do so well if they just brought cooler clothes to the plus-size market. Like, just because you're a size 16 doesn't mean you want to wear cashmere? The fashion industry doesn't quite get the marketability of it. I think that, if they were able to do plus-size in luxury fabrics, it would do very well. They'd have to learn to proportion it — it's going to change the numbering. You wouldn't just do 16, 18, or 20. You would do a 20A, which is top-heavy, or a 20B. And knowing that those proportions are going to change, you would probably do smaller runs, but there's a market there that people haven't yet tapped into."

She Knows the Importance of Custom Tailoring

She Knows the Importance of Custom Tailoring

Mindy's Style: Mindy never wears anything too baggy, tight, or ill-fitting, which is mostly due to the fact that behind the scenes, things are being custom cut to fit her.

SP's Tip: "It's all about the fit of the clothes that makes [Mindy] look so good. And I think that is the biggest tool that anybody can take from this. One of the outfits from the season premiere was that bright green blouse and skirt with a cream jacket. That cream jacket was from Topshop — it was $43. But once it was recut to her, it looked so expensive. You can take the cheapest outfit and, with a little bit of alterations, make it look expensive."

She's Mastered the Mixed-Print Look

She's Mastered the Mixed-Print Look

Mindy's Style: Floral and striped. Houndstooth and plaid. All these combinations sound crazy alone, but on Mindy, they just work. The girl can pull off a mixed print with the best of 'em.

SP's Tip: "If the scales don't work together, it doesn't necessarily work — it has to sort of blend. There's an outfit on Mindy this year that I love — it's a houndstooth jacket, a paisley blouse, a plaid skirt, and lace booties. If I just described it and didn't show you, it sounds crazy — houndstooth, paisley, and plaid? But the scale of it all worked and the tonality of it worked. The houndstooth is gray and gray, the blouse was blue and gray, and the skirt was black and white. It was sort of tonal, so you just saw the color without seeing all the texture."

She Always Wears Killer Accessories

She Always Wears Killer Accessories

Mindy's Style: How many earrings does Mindy actually own? Because it seems like a lot. From statement making to simple, that little something extra always seems to tie her outfits together — and makes us want to immediately raid her jewelry stash.

SP's Tip: "I think that accessories need to tell a little bit about who you are. It's sort of like we could all be wearing the exact same blouse or skirt or plain black dress, but how you accessorize it is you. I love the idea that you can stand out because of how you put something together or the combination that you put together."

Her Bright Coats Never Look Tacky

Mindy's Style: No black bombers here — Mindy's fabulous, bright-colored coats are something this show is known for, and her yellow double-breasted option is practically iconic. Every time we tune in, we're inspired to be a bit more daring with our outerwear.

SP’s Tip: "I love doing coats for Mindy and would love to be able to bring color to the masses. I think that it just brightens your wardrobe. I would love to come to New York one day and see a sea of color."

She's Not Afraid to Break a Rule or Two

She's Not Afraid to Break a Rule or Two

Mindy's Style: The girl loves her daring style choices, and much like the mixed prints, she is not afraid to break a rule or two. We admire her boldness when it comes to clothes, as well as her ability to challenge a fashion rule without hesitation.

SP's Tip: "I think that we can wear white year-round. Or Winter white. But I know, 'No white after Labor Day or Serial Mom will kill you.' It's funny because I'll quote that movie. It's like, 'Serial Mom is going to kill you, but we're going to wear white after Labor Day.'"
