Let Ashley Graham's Thoughts on "Plus-Size" Become Your Confidence-Building Mantra

When we first heard that the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue would feature a plus-size model in an ad for the first time, we knew it was big news. But we didn't realize how big. The face (and curves) behind the campaign, Ashley Graham, began trending nationwide, and social media was flooded with tweets and Facebook comments declaring the "rise of plus size."

We talked to the stunner about the ad and its aftermath, along with what she hopes to do next. Plus, we couldn't help but ask Graham — who also happens to design lingerie — for her plus-size shopping tips. And what she says about being labeled "plus size" is something every woman needs to scrawl in lipstick on their bathroom mirror.

POPSUGAR: Your campaign has caused conjecture that this is the year when plus size truly goes mainstream. Do you see that happening? What do you hope will come out of this moment in the spotlight?

Ashley Graham: I’m so happy to be the face of the #CurvesInBikinis campaign because it’s a real achievement in curvy-girl history. Finally the industry is recognizing what many of us have always known: curves are sexy. I hope this sparks more momentum for women to flaunt their curves, whether it’s at the pool or while on vacation or as part of a major ad campaign. The world is ready to see more curves in bikinis!

PS: Sports Illustrated also revealed that a plus-size model got a spot in its "rookies of the year" editorial. So, when do you think we'll see plus size on the cover of the Swimsuit Issue?

AG: The response to this ad has been overwhelmingly positive, not just from women but also from men who love to see curvy women in string bikinis. People are starting to realize how sexy curves are, and I think there is a huge desire to see more. I’d love to see more plus-size women in Sports Illustrated and myself on the cover for next year!

PS: After this, what would be your dream campaign to land?

AG: Doing a major makeup campaign!

PS: What did you think of the black string bikini you wore for the campaign? How'd SwimsuitsForAll decide on that one?

AG: This suit is part of the brand's Swim Sexy line, and this collection includes their first string bikinis! It shows off every inch of my curves, and I felt amazing in it.

PS: Plus size or not, women of all body types can agree that it takes a lot of confidence to wear a bikini. What makes posing in a sexy swimsuit less intimidating?

AG: Your curves are sexy, so be confident and don’t be afraid to show them off!

PS: What tips do you have for plus-size swimsuit shopping?

AG: When I’m shopping for a bathing suit, support is most important! I love a triangle top because it looks great and provides enough support. The most important thing for women to keep in mind is to find something that they feel good in — as long as you feel good when you’re on the beach and at the pool, that’s all that matters.

PS: You've also designed a plus-size lingerie line for Addition Elle. What do you look for when it comes to plus-size lingerie? What's most important?

AG: My motto is, "It all starts with the bra!" If your bra doesn't fit correctly, then the rest of you isn't going to look complete.

PS: How does it feel to be classified as a "plus-size" model? What are your thoughts on the term?

AG:  At this point I have been called plus size for 15 years. I don't care what people want to call me. I know who I am. A model. I don't need a label to explain the size of my hips.
