9 Miss USA Contestants Reveal How to Work Out Like a Pageant Queen

Unless you've been there under the heat of the spotlights, that sparkling crown just within reach, it's hard to imagine the immense pressure that Miss USA contestants feel leading up to the pageant. The fact that it's aired live — and that part of the competition involves strutting your stuff across a very long stage and splayed across HDTVs across the country — makes the pressure even more monumental. These women work all year long in a hyperfocused mentality that involves a lot of time spent running, cycling, lifting, and working with trainers. Backstage during the rehearsals leading up to the competition, we asked a handful of them what they do to get in onstage shape.

"Fitness is extremely important to me, and I work out all the time," said Miss Oregon's Toneata Morgan, who actually created her own line of activewear. "In terms of preparation for the competition, besides just cardio, I really focused on weight training. I had a trainer who really helped me to focus on that."

She explained that about a month before the competition, she'd do about an hour of cardio and then a half hour of weight resistance exercises every day except for Sundays.

She also stressed the importance of nutrition, saying, "You can work out as much as you want, but you have to make sure that you're eating healthy and also making sure that you stay strong and have enough energy to keep you going throughout the day."

Put on your leg warmers, people. You'll never be able to guess what Miss Mississippi (how great is that title?) does to stay in shape.

"I get really bored working out, so I found these Mario Lopez videos that are literally from the '80s with the cheesy leg warmers and the headbands and it's overlooking this lake," Laine Mansour told POPSUGAR. "They're short 10-minute workouts, and it's entertaining, it gets me laughing, and it's a good workout."

The lesson here is to find a workout that makes you laugh!

Bryce Armstrong, Miss District of Columbia, said that she's lucky enough to be a naturally fit person who can eat whatever she wants and still look great, which sort of comes in handy considering she's a baker. That said, she doesn't slack when it comes to gym time.

"Once you're in that state of mind that you're already naturally fit, you have that mindset that you don't need to work out. But my fitness coach is really tough on me and made sure I was working out about three to four times a week leading up to the pageant," she told POPSUGAR.

Hawaii

"Throughout the year, I live a really active lifestyle, mostly because I live in Hawaii and have so many opportunities to be outdoors. I'm a mother of three wiener dogs, so I'm always taking them out to the beach with me and hiking, and so we get a lot of exercise," said Julianne Chu, Miss Hawaii." I'm a full-time teacher, so I usually am busy in the day, and then in the afternoons, I spend my time doing that with them. If I can't make it outdoors, I go to the gym."

For the pageant, she said that she focused more on building muscle.

"I have more of a leaner body, so I wanted to build more muscle to show definition. I lifted really, really heavy, and then towards the end, as the pageant got closer, I did all cardio just to shred all the fat."

When it comes to fitness, Miss Wyoming's Callie Bishop told us that she thinks about the laws of physics.

"An object in motion stays in motion, so I try to stay active. And I'm really lucky — I grew up competitively dancing, playing basketball, and golf, and I got my degree in dance, so I had either an obligation or an education to work toward that and that taught me all those skills," she said. "I was very blessed coming into the pageant having an awareness of my body and knowing how to really take care of my 'tool' in a lot of ways."

Here's the kicker — she's also a full-time yoga teacher. In that sense, getting pageant ready was really just about keeping up momentum she'd built from over the years and listening to her body.

When we asked about Miss North Dakota's fitness routine, we could tell that she had her regimen down to a science.

"I normally like to do about three days of cardio, which involves a lot of elliptical work. I love to run, but that builds up a lot of muscle in my legs and that's not really what I'm looking for since I'm trying to tone down," Abigail Pogatshnik said. "I also lift three days for the other part of the week, which is really fun. I do whole body lifting, so I don't just go in there and do arms or legs — I do everything. The lifting helps to isolate areas and makes things pop a little bit more so you have that definition."

"I am a huge cycling fan, so I do a lot of cycling. Also, I have a newfound love for Barry's Bootcamp. I go all the time," said Miss Kentucky's Braea Tilford. "For those who don't know, Barry's Bootcamp is a high-intensity training class and it's so fun. I love to go on a Saturday morning with a friend and then grab a smoothie after. It's really fun, and the instructors are so interactive with everyone in class. You get an awesome sweat in, and on ab day, I feel like I'm ready to go to the beach — it's crazy."

If ever you're seeking motivation to work out, perhaps bringing a dog along is the way to go! At least that's the case for Miss Utah's Narine Ishhanov.

"I love to go on jogs with my Golden Retriever outside," she said. "I love being in nature, and actually there's been a lot of studies that have been done that say if you go on a run or a simple walk outdoors without your phone for at least 20 minutes a day, your memory and mental health improves. Being with a cute dog helps, too!"

For Miss Maine's Marina Gray, there's nothing better than training in the fresh outdoors.

"I'm very active outside. I love hiking, and I live near a national park in the Summer, so I spend a lot of my time outside being active," she said. "My fitness routine for the pageant changed. I went to the gym every day, and a lot getting in shape for this was based around my diet. I was never really that aware of what I was putting in my body and the repercussions of eating different types of food. I actually cut out gluten and dairy, which made my focus less foggy over time, and I also saw results in my body being less bloated. I also felt like I had more energy."
