5 Buzziest New Health Foods to Add to Your Snack List

Every year I eagerly await attending the Natural Products Expo West, one of the biggest natural-foods trade shows in the country. With over 80,000 people in attendance and thousands of exhibits to veg out at, I feel like a kid in a giant candy store, exploring the newest health trends and sampling the buzziest new foods.

After racking up 30,000 steps over the Anaheim Convention Center, the Hilton, and the Marriott hotel (and the food truck courtyard joining the three buildings), I got to taste more than my stomach could handle. Luckily, my taste buds were still able to narrow it down to the five foods that piqued my interest the most and satisfied all my cravings with a superfood punch.

Cricket Flour

Cricket Flour

Yes, you read that correctly. Crickets! I tasted some freshly baked banana bread made with Bitty cricket flour. I chased it with some of its new Chiridos air-puffed cricket chips.

When I saw crickets, I knew this was definitely buzz-worthy. But I was worried about how it'd taste. After sampling both products, I was sold. The Baja Ranchero-flavored chips reminded me of Cool Ranch corn nuts (you know, just way healthier). My favorite was the Salsa Verde though (I love a good kick).

The benefits: It's super high in protein. Like, three times a piece of steak. Dr. Josh Axe is a fan, and so am I!

Macadamia Milk

Macadamia Milk

We know the classics: almond and coconut. But get ready — a new nut is entering the milking game: macadamia. I tasted the Milkadamia unsweetened macadamia milk, which is deliciously creamy and gave me slight Hawaiian vibes.

Then I had it blended for me in a latte (the ones with the oh-so-Instagram-worthy foam art). Let's just say, it not only looked pretty, but its silky texture made it that much more desirable.

The benefits: It's a great dairy-free, soy-free, and non-GMO alternative to other milks on the market.

Almond Dip

Almond Dip

I tried this dip from La Onda . . . it was just heavenly. Period. It tasted like hummus, but since it's made with almonds, not legumes, you don't get the same gassy, bloated effect most people get when eating legumes, which was a double win.

The brand sampled a fresh new ginger-wasabi flavor and a spicy habanero flavor that gives you a nice kick. Roasted garlic was definitely my fave. Grab some cricket chips and go to town on these protein-packed snacks!

The benefits: It's plant-based and nutrient rich. And again, no bloating — heck yeah!

Maple Water

Maple Water

Step aside, coconut water, maple is here to play. It was very light and refreshing. I stopped by the DRINKmaple booth for happy hour and enjoyed some whiskey over maple ice cubes. For a guy who doesn't usually order whiskey, it gave it a nice flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed (which made the rest of my adventure at Expo West a lot more flirty #WhiskyTipsy).

The brand was also sampling its new watermelon water, which is another honorable mention. It's on Dr. Mark Hyman's list, after all!

The benefits: It's ultra hydrating and nutrient-rich, and it has half the sugar as coconut water. Plus, it's a brand that gives back. What could be better?

Mushroom Coffee

Mushroom Coffee

I know. It sounds a little gross, but hear me out. 'Shrooms are all the rage right now. And the Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee is actually pretty tasty! It packs a nice morning boost. I took a sampler box to try out its different flavors. I had the Reishi and Cordyceps. Both reminded me more of a warm soupy broth, perfect for a chilly day.

The benefits: It is rich in antioxidants, great for the immune system, and gives you a kick without the jitters!
