When the first Latin Grammys were announced on Sept. 13, 2000 at the Los Angeles Staples Center, Latin radio was playing lots of Maná, Shakira, and Luis Miguel. Reggaeton was not yet a thing, and even Pitbull's catchy pop beats weren't heard every time a song in Spanish (or English) came on. The tunes were mostly two things: rock or romantic.
