The Biggest Wedding Photo Mistakes Your Photographer Wants You to Know

When it comes to your wedding photos, you only want the best results. Awkward-looking shots and bad lighting are a couple of things feared most, but there are some things to consider to get the best possible photos on your big day. To find out tips and avoidable mistakes, we've talked to award-winning international wedding photographer, Tony Gambino, whose work is displayed above. He's shot well over 100 weddings, including Ethen Roberts' from MTV's Nitro Circus. See his suggestions for avoiding bad photos.

1. Eliminate as much stress as you can on your wedding day.

"One of the biggest mistakes that I've seen a handful of times is when couples forget to hire a wedding coordinator, or they just think they can do it all themselves," Tony said. It's worth getting help from someone who can handle all the logistics for you. He's had many brides on their phone all day of their wedding who were unable to fully enjoy every moment. Even if a wedding coordinator is out of your budget, ask one of your friends to help out. You don't want the stress translating in your pictures!

"Trust me, you'll enjoy your day much more. And from a photographer's perspective, the less stressed you are, the better the photos will turn out," he said.

2. Have your wedding at an indoor/outdoor venue.

Tony suggests planning to have your wedding outside for the best lighting, but to also have a backup. Key tips include holding your ceremony one to two hours before sunset, and having your guests facing directly towards the sun.

"This will give the absolute best results, lighting wise," said Tony. "If you can be in the shade, even better!"

3. Go for candid over posed.

For couples who are camera shy, it's best to pick a photographer who you can be comfortable with and laugh around. "Pick a photographer that takes a candid approach," said Tony. "This is huge! You don't want every image to feel contrived — this can absolutely make or break the entire feeling of your images."
