A Woman Gave Birth on a Transpacific Flight Thanks to a Skilled Passenger

Well, this is something they definitely don't cover in the preflight safety demonstrations. On a recent overseas China Air flight from Taiwan to Los Angeles, a pregnant passenger suddenly went into early labor. Luckily, a resident physician at the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Angelica Zen, was on that same flight.

Zen was en route back from her honeymoon in Bali when flight attendants put out an in-flight announcement asking for the assistance of any medical professionals. And although she had no experience in obstetrics, she was willing to help. She also fortunately speaks Mandarin Chinese, which allowed her to communicate with the mother.

In an interview with ABC7, Zen said: "I had very limited supplies with me, and it was very difficult. We had to work under very constrained circumstances."

Thankfully, the baby girl was born safely and successfully just before a detoured landing in Anchorage, AK. Now they just have to determine if the baby was born within a 12-mile radius of Alaska, which would make her a US citizen.
