5 Ways to Make Your Firstborn Feel Special While Baby Number 2 Is on the Way

Having baby number two on the way is an exciting time for every family, but it's important that your firstborn is adjusted before their sibling arrives. Getting used to another attention-grabber is something that many children have a hard time with in the beginning, especially when they're used to being the center of everyone's universe. In order to prepare, here are a handful of ways to make your child still feel like number one.

1. Inform Them of What's Happening

Take the time to sit down with your child at the beginning of your pregnancy to explain that a baby brother or sister is on the way. Then throughout the pregnancy, continue to reinforce it while using terminology like "our baby" to make the experience seem more about them.

2. Let Them Help

Include your firstborn in the preparation for baby by allowing them to help pick out new toys and clothes. Once the baby arrives, get your child involved in things like nappy changes, baths, and even giving a bottle — it's all about teamwork.

3. Go on a Special Trip

Spending quality time with your child before another baby comes into the picture is very important. Whether it's a nice weekend getaway or a big family vacation, take the opportunity to travel with your little one. Who knows when you'll have the chance to do it again!

4. Give Them a Gift

When the baby arrives, give your firstborn a present from the baby to reward them for becoming an older sibling. They'll feel important and eager to take on this new role while forming a positive relationship with their new brother or sister from the start.

5. Praise Their Job Well Done

Make sure to hype up their involvement so that they take pride in being the best helper and big sibling. Pay attention to their accomplishments, and make it a point to tell them that your love will never change despite changing situations.
