This Man Is on an Inspiring Mission to Mow Lawns For Those in Need Across All 50 States

In 2016, Rodney Smith Jr. came across a man struggling to mow his lawn. That's when Rodney, a computer science student at the time, got out of his car and offered his help. Then inspiration struck. Just a few years later, Rodney is now the founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service, a nonprofit organization that has kids and adolescents offer their lawn mowing services free of charge for the elderly, veterans, single moms, or anyone else in need. Not only that, but he's currently making his way across the country mowing lawns in each and every state . . . for the second time.

In an interview with CBS News, Rodney revealed that the youth program currently has 137 participants across the nation, as well as a few in Canada, Bermuda, and the UK. After seeing the program's success, Rodney then created the 50 Yard Challenge, which encourages kids to mow 50 lawns free of charge and share their experiences on social media.

Last year, Rodney decided to take the challenge to the next level by mowing lawns across the nation in his 50 Yards in 50 States Challenge. This Summer, he's doing it all over again. How does it work? Rodney routinely shares updates on his general travel plans, and anyone in need of some help around the yard can apply and "submit a lawn" on his website. This way, Rodney can plan ahead and know which cities he'll be visiting.

After completing his second challenge, Rodney has big plans for his organization and hopes to start a scholarship program for kids who participate in the 50 Yard Challenge. "They are doing so much for their communities, that it's important to give back to them for their education," he told CBS. Rodney has also since received his degree in computer science, but hopes to get his master's in — what else? — social work.
