Why Tandem Breastfeeding Can Seem So Scary, According to This New Mom of 2

A mom is opening up about the many conflicting feelings she experienced upon learning that she was pregnant again just months after giving birth. On the Facebook page Breastfeeding Mama Talk, the mom wrote candidly about her two daughters, tandem breastfeeding, and the power of the female body.

Alongside a picture of herself breastfeeding, the mom explained that she became pregnant a second time when her daughter was just 3 months old. What's more, her first time giving birth was not easy. "My daughter was born with a knot in her cord and it wrapped around her four times. She got stuck and came out Violet just like her name." Fortunately, Violet was OK and latched onto her mom shortly thereafter. "Since that moment my boobs have been hers."

Later into her pregnancy, the mom became fearful as her breast milk supply began to dwindle. "My worst fear came true, I had to supplement. I felt like a failure, I felt like I was failing her; breastfeeding was her comfort, her favourite thing," she said. The mom said she ultimately was able to push through and continue breastfeeding again before the birth of her second child.

When her second daughter, Tallulah, was born, she quickly latched, much like Violet. Though she worried that they would have trouble sharing, it all worked out in the end. "When she came to the hospital to meet her new sister and saw me feeding her she was instantly interested," she said, adding, "Instead of the jealousy I thought I was in for, she made herself comfy on my other boob and held her sister's tiny hand."

Now, the mom has been successfully tandem feeding for three months. She even said she has discovered her "purpose in life": "To nourish and feed these beautiful humans. My boobs may sag, my nipples may be larger, but this is what my body was made for."
