Swollen ankles and legs are caused by edema, a pregnancy-induced condition when excess fluid collects in your tissue that's most common in your third trimester. After your baby is born, the swelling will go down, but in the meantime, there are things you can do to help, including elevating your feet, exercising regularly, drinking lots of water, and avoiding salty foods.
