Reasons You Have to See The BFG With Your Kids

As I sat down in the theater of a press screening for Disney's The BFG, I felt like a giddy child. Written in 1982 by Roald Dahl, the story of the Big Friendly Giant and little Sophie's unlikely friendship has been one of my favorites since I learned how to read on my own. Though I'm always the one to mutter "the book was better" under my breath after seeing a film adaptation, this movie 100 percent did not disappoint.

If you're looking for a film to take your child to that will not only give them reason to read a classic children's book, but also teach them some valuable life lessons, The BFG is that movie. Read through for the seven reasons you have to take your kid to see this incredible film, which hits theaters July 1.

01
Roald Dahl stories are the best stories.

Roald Dahl stories are the best stories.

The movies that come from Dahl’s books — Matilda, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and The Witches — are some of the best book-to-movie interpretations we’ve ever seen (and some of the most entertaining).

02
It’s Steven Spielberg’s first Disney film.

It’s Steven Spielberg’s first Disney film.

As if it weren’t enough that this movie is an adaptation of one of the greatest Roald Dahl books of all time, the man who brought us ET, Jurassic Park, and so much more is giving new meaning to the term “the magic of Disney."

03
It’s beautiful.

It’s beautiful.

The live-action film features amazing views from The BFG’s perspective, who can see miles and miles across England and straight into scenic "Giant Country."

04
It deals with bullying and standing up for yourself and others.

It deals with bullying and standing up for yourself and others.

With the help of Sophie, who reminds The BFG that he shouldn’t have to “just take” the meanness of the other giants, The BFG learns to stand up for himself and other important lessons about bullying along the way.

05
It’s hilarious.

It’s hilarious.

Between the giant’s silly, jumbled-up gibberish and a scene complete with the queen of England tooting at the breakfast table, your laughter will be basically uncontrollable throughout most of the film.

06
Bill Hader as the Bloodbottler is the best kid movie “villain” we’ve seen in a while.

Bill Hader as the Bloodbottler is the best kid movie “villain” we’ve seen in a while.

The Bloodbottler, though a terrifying giant who eats kiddos, is one of the most hysterical characters in the movie. He visits The BFG to have his “boo-boos” looked after, cracks endless one-liners (some that we can only imagine Hader had a hand in adding to the script), and speaks in the same quirky gibberish as the rest of the giants.

07
It leaves you feeling good.

It leaves you feeling good.

The story of Sophie and The BFG’s unlikely friendship has a happy ending that will definitely have you and your littles leaving the theater with huge smiles on your faces.
