It is important to know the difference between dog ticks and deer ticks. Lyme Disease is carried by deer ticks. They are much smaller than dog ticks and can look like a freckle. I had the bulls eye marking which was very sore and itchy and was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. I never saw the tick. There is a test for LD but it takes a while to give results so they usually go ahead and start antibiotics if it is suspected. For good pictures of all types of ticks go to the Lyme Disease Assoc. website (lymediseaseassociation.org) . My LD was treated with 2 rounds of antibiotics and I never had any symptoms.

Up in Maine parents remove ticks with a product called a tick key, a simple piece of aluminum that eases the tick off without damaging the head. It's made for pets, so it's sold through pet stores, but everyone uses them for kids.

Remember to check in between toes!
Tick bites are less of a concern when the tick has been pulled off within 24 hours. Keep an eye on the bite, and if the person starts to feel like they have the flu/cold get some antibiotics for tick related diseases.
If the head gets left in the skin when pulled out, don't freak out. Our body generally pushes it out of the skin. But keep an eye on it in case it gets infected.
I am a forester and get hundreds of bites of year.

If you suffocate a tick you run the risk of it regurgitating and the risk of Lyme disease increases tremendously. It's best to use tweezers and get the tick tested. If you can't get it out without breaking off the head just go to the hospital and have them removd it.

You should also Keep The Tick!!! A doctor will not know if your child has been exposed to Lyme disease as it doesn't always leave a bullseye. You Have To Get the Tick Tested!!!! (while it's alive).

If the tick has latched on, do NOT pull it out with tweezers. You risk leaving the head of the tick inside. Get a cotton swab and put a few pumps of liquid soap on it and hold it on the tick for a few minutes. The tick will not be able to breathe, and it will withdrawal on its own, then you can dispose of it and clean the bitten area effectively.
