Annie
Everett Collection

Annie

Year: 1982

Age it's recommended for: 6+

Reasons they need to see it: Aside from all of them?! To start, it's the cutest movie of all time, your kids will love singing the songs, and it teaches some great lessons about not judging a book by its cover.

What to look out for: There are a few references to sex (which will likely go over your kids' heads), some drinking on Miss Hannigan's part, smoking, and the scene in the end when Annie is being chased and then is seen hanging from the bridge could cause some distress.

Babe
Everett Collection

Babe

Year: 1995

Age it's recommended for: 5+

Reasons they need to see it: If Babe isn't just the most heartwarming movie in the world, I don't know what is. Farm animals, cute voices, the message to never give up — this movie is just the best.

What to look out for: There's a lot of talk about how sweet little farm animals become food . . . so there's that.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Everett Collection

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

Year: 1982

Age it's recommended for: 7+

Reasons they need to see it: Where do I start? A 7-year-old Drew Barrymore? Classic lines like "E.T. phone home"? Or the story of a little boy's love for his alien friend? It's a classic tale that every child must see — even if it feels a bit dated.

What to look out for: The scenes with the scientists are a bit scary for younger kids. But more importantly, it's just sad. Be prepared for some tears — yours and your kids'.

Chicken Run
Everett Collection

Chicken Run

Year: 2000

Age it's recommended for: 6+

Reasons they need to see it: This movie is totally silly and sends a great message of teamwork and having to cooperate to complete any type of mission.

What to look out for: A few of the characters are in various forms of danger throughout, but it's all pretty comedic for the most part.

Anastasia
Everett Collection

Anastasia

Year: 1997

Age it's recommended for: 6+

Reasons they need to see it: Anastasia is a badass female role model who stands up for herself and works hard to achieve her goals.

What to look out for: The villain in this one is pretty creepy, but most of the violence is cartoonish rather than scary (though Anastasia is constantly in danger, so if that bothers your little one, they might be upset with how much goes wrong in this flick).

The Little Rascals
Everett Collection

The Little Rascals

Year: 1994

Age it's recommended for: 7+

Reasons they need to see it: First love, keeping up appearances in front of your "bros," go-karts, talent shows, and more make up this iconic film that covers literally every aspect of childhood in one mischievous little package. Also, mini Bug Hall and an adorable Travis Tedford will show your kids that even the best of friends have fights sometimes, but with a little work, they can always forgive and forget.

What to look out for: Alfalfa and the gang get themselves into some sticky situations, but most of the sound effects and scary elements are slapstick. Also, the term "He-Man Woman Haters Club" might bring up a few choice conversations.

Big Daddy
Everett Collection

Big Daddy

Year: 1992

Age it's recommended for: 12+

Reasons they need to see it: As the first movie I ever owned in DVD format, I can't speak highly enough of this movie. I first saw it around 12 years old, and ever since, I've quoted it pretty regularly, as it has some seriously hilarious quotes. It's a great way to ease your kids into Adam Sandler's crude humor.

What to look out for: Just because the movie features an adorable kiddo doesn't mean that all of the content is kid-friendly. Between sexual references, a million mentions of Hooters, and some other adult humor, this one isn't for the youngest of the crew.

The Parent Trap
Everett Collection

The Parent Trap

Year: 1961

Age it's recommended for: 6+

Reasons they need to see it: This classic version of the more popular Lindsay Lohan adaptation is just as amazing. It's super charming and sends a ton of positive messages about love, teamwork, understanding, and communication.

What to look out for: Honestly? There really isn't anything in this one that comes up as cause for concern.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Everett Collection

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Year: 1989

Age it's recommended for: 6+

Reasons they need to see it: Rick Moranis — need I say more? Fine, I will. This movie is such a classic between its '80s vibes and the endearing portrayal of unexpected underdog heroes; you won't find a kid who doesn't love this one.

What to look out for: When I was a kid I was deeply disturbed over the size of "Anty" because he was, well, gross. The kids get into some trouble along the way across the backyard, one of them almost drowning during a drizzle that creates huge, unavoidable puddles.

Armageddon
Everett Collection

Armageddon

Year: 1998

Age it's recommended for: 13+

Reasons they need to see it: Aside from the fact that it is the most thrilling, beautiful movie, this one teaches a lot of important lessons about sacrifice and stepping up for the good of all people. And the theme song is "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith, which can be the sole reason you show this one because what. a. tune.

What to look out for: This one is pretty violent in a very tragic and deep way. A lot of things go wrong — crashes, fires, deaths — and can I just (spoiler alert) get a moment of silence for Harry Stamper, aka Bruce Willis?

Can't Buy Me Love
Everett Collection

Can't Buy Me Love

Year: 1987

Age it's recommended for: 13+

Reasons they need to see it: Cindy Mancini had it all, didn't she? I mean, the convertible Cabriolet (I may have begged my parents for one at the time) and McDreamy before anyone even realized it! Sure, the storyline was predictable, but there are lessons in there that kids today can benefit from, too.

What to look out for: Not much aside from drinking and a bit of nudity. It's perfection!

Grease
Everett Collection

Grease

Year: 1978

Age it's recommended for: 13+

Reasons they need to see it: I mean, chances are your kid already knows half the words to this flick without ever having seen it. The soundtrack is classic and young Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta are just adorable.

What to look out for: This movie took place in the 1950s, so there's a ton of objectification of women, rigid gender roles, smoking, drinking, sexual references, and plenty of language.
