The last known surviving Sept. 11 rescue dog, Bretagne, has sadly passed away at 16. The Golden Retriever and her owner, Denise Corliss of Texas Task Force 1, were deployed to Ground Zero following the attacks on the World Trade Center. They also lent their assistance after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Though Bretagne seemed jovial at her 16th birthday party last year, old age had ultimately slowed her down, and she had to be euthanized on Monday, June 6.

As she approached her final veterinarian visit, Bretagne was honored with a final hero's salute by firefighters and search and rescue specialists. The video, shown above, of Bretagne fragilely walking past everyone will absolutely destroy your emotions.
