This Choir Member's Post About Resigning Over Trump's Inauguration Deserves a Standing Ovation

Add someone else to the list of people unwilling to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration in January.

On Thursday, a Mormon Tabernacle Choir member wrote on Facebook that she resigned from the group after it accepted Trump's invitation to sing at the event. Jan Chamberlain posted the letter she sent to the choir, writing, "My heart is shattered and broken . . . but my conscience is clear."

Chamberlain has been with the choir affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for five years and added that "I could never look myself in the mirror again with self respect" if she performed and that it appears the "choir is endorsing tyranny and fascism by singing for this man."

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spokesperson Eric Hawkins told The Salt Lake Tribune that participation in the performance was voluntary. "Only a limited number of choir members are participating (the number is limited by the inaugural committee), and none are required to participate," he said. About 215 members are expected to perform, according to the Tribune.

Chamberlain's Facebook post has gone viral with more than 7,000 likes and 2,000 shares. She ended the letter by writing, "I only know I could never 'throw roses to Hitler.' And I certainly could never sing for him."

She joins some of the Rockettes and numerous celebrities who have refused to perform at the inauguration taking place Jan. 20.
