How a Meal Delivery Service Encouraged Me to Eat Healthier

I've never been one to defer to takeout on weeknights. I'd sooner run to the supermarket than spend time reading through online menus. That being said, busy nights don't particularly lend themselves to a full grocery shopping trip. In an effort to find an easier solution that still allows me to enjoy the process of cooking, I explored a meal delivery service — and I'll never look back.

Most services don't provide meals for an entire week, and the one I chose sent ingredients for three nights of dinner. My roommate reaped the benefits because each night was portioned for two. They came with step-by-step instructions and everything from herbs to spices. For the first time in a while, I didn't have to think twice about what I'd eat that night. Not only that, but the well-portioned servings made me realize that I didn't have to overeat in order to feel satisfied.

Day 1: Grab the Tools

Day 1: Grab the Tools

The one thing the packages don't include is cooking tools. To inspire my meal prep, I picked up colorful sets that brightened my kitchen. More importantly, I made sure to invest in quality tools that I knew would last. I was excited about my new cooking adventures. I also made sure to find a set of nonstick sautée pans, because no one has the time to be bothered with a lengthy cleanup.

Day 2: Food Prep 101

You don't have to be a seasoned chef to know the basics of prepping food. Probably the most important rule of thumb is to pay attention to measurements. If the recipe calls for half a cup of parmesan cheese, there's probably a reason. I tend to go a bit heavy on the cheese under normal circumstances, so easy-to-read measuring cups and a specific recipe in front of me made it easy to not go overboard.

Forget about the money I saved on delivery and eating out. I was marveling at my ability to create perfectly well-balanced and nutritious food with half the effort. A citrusy side salad can bring a plate to life, and teriyaki salmon is perfectly polished off with sesame seeds. I didn't necessarily pay attention to these things before, so they were great takeaways.

Day 4: What a Time Saver!

Day 4: What a Time Saver!

So far, so very good. After a few days of my new dinner routine, I felt better, I was more energized, and I actually was able to make time for other things like exercising. The efficiency helped me learn a few things about my routine that I can continue to implement. Cleaning as you go means no big mess to deal with at the end. Also, if you're able to pull up your recipes online, use a tablet and stand it up for seamless prep.

Day 5: Plan For the Weekend

Day 5: Plan For the Weekend

The week was coming to an end and I'd been so happy in my routine, so thinking about the weekend was sort of a buzzkill. The simplest solution was to use the skills and tools I'd been relying on all week and make recipe substitutions. Instead of spinach, I threw broccolini in the pan, and instead of going with a healthy main course like salmon, I treated myself to fluffy gnocchi. Overall, I couldn't be happier with the improvement in my overall wellness and my newfound confidence in cooking.
