The October Blood Moon Wants You to Put Energy Into Your Relationships

In astrology, full moons tend to signify a highly emotional time. It's when we're prompted to close out chapters in our lives, and typically marks a time for change in general. But blood full moons? These uncommon astronomical events tend to be even more intense.

On Oct. 28, the only full blood moon of 2023 will rise in headstrong Taurus, bringing fierce shifts that can cause rifts in our sense of security as we try to keep a fair balance between our hearts and our minds. This moment is all about finding the confidence to get our needs met and getting out of our comfort zones. Plus, it wouldn't truly feel like Halloween without a spooky lunar eclipse right?

If you're curious what this October 2023 full blood moon will bring for you, Imani Quinn, astrologer and author of "Astrology SOS," explains the spiritual meaning and how the full blood moon of 2023 will affect every zodiac signs. Prepare accordingly.

Why Is It Called the Blood Moon?

October's full moon falls around the same time of year when hunters historically were prompted to forage for food to prepare for winter, per the Old Farmer's Almanac. In turn, this gave the full moon the nickname October full blood moon. "Animals are beginning to fatten up ahead of winter, and since the farmers had recently cleaned out their fields under the harvest moon [in September], hunters could easily see the deer and other animals that had come out to root through the remaining scraps," the almanac reads. This lunation also goes by "full hunter's moon" and "drying rice moon" in indigenous cultures.

What Is the Spiritual Meaning of the Blood Moon?

Just as this lunation prepares us for the bitter frosts of winter, you can think of October's blood moon as a time for emotional catharsis. That's because this lunation also happens to be a partial lunar eclipse, which emphasizes the need to purge all the things that are holding you back from unlocking your true potential. "Spiritually, the hunter's moon is a great time to continue ritual from the fall equinox in September and prepare for winter," Quinn tells POPSUGAR.

In astrology, Taurus is associated with material comforts, security, and self-worth. "Taurus energy is inviting us to get grounded and to enjoy the luxury of our home and what it is that makes us feel good," Quinn explains. But when a pesky eclipse is part of the equation (and an intense standoff with Pluto) we're likely to spill all ugly truths as we find the power to demand alignment with our higher selves. That said, this lunation is perfect for releasing burdens and surrendering to the unpredictable waters ahead. "Make sure you are finding ways to nurture and feed your soul through the process as a Taurus would do," says Quinn.
