When it comes to cosmetics, I am most definitely a lip person. My gateway beauty product was a clear, balm-like lipstick, and since I received it at a very young age, I've hoarded approximately (and this is a low estimate) more than 500 lipsticks in my lifetime. So, as a result, I've seen many trends come and go.

Rainbow lips, matte lips, Kylie Jenner lips, mood-changing lips, and more viral techniques have all had their days in the limelight. That said, I'm more impressed by the innovations in the formulations behind these trends. Just think about it: somewhere right now, cosmetics chemists are holed up in a lab, trying to come up with the next crazy-cool idea that will make consumers go wild.

For example, Lancome made us all lose our minds when it launched Juicy Shaker, because the concept (and formula!) was brilliantly unique. Likewise, peel-off stains from Korea are also having a moment. Are you wondering what else is out there? Read on to discover the edgiest new trends in lip color formulas.

See Through

See Through

These lipsticks function largely like a tinted balm, but with one standout difference: the formula. It's almost as if a witch solidified a gloss into a stick, creating a magical, jello-like bullet. Linda Cantello, the international makeup artist for Armani Beauty, had one of these in her long-discontinued eponymous line, and both Maybelline and Clarins produced similar products in limited-edition runs. Therefore, see-through lipsticks can be hard to find but are worth snapping up — if not for the cool factor alone.

Oil

Oil

If your pout is in need of serious hydration, turn to one of these formulas. They'll make your lips shine like a gloss but provide major benefits that many glosses do not — namely deep, nourishing moisture. Natural oils (brands offer options including coconut, apricot kernel, and olive oils, to name a few) soothe parched puckers and plump fine lines. They're also just fun to reapply!

Cushion

Cushion

The cushion makeup trend quickly expanded out of the compact foundation category to other makeup products, but I'm especially fond of how they work on lips. Lip colors with cushion tips have two obvious (and glorious) benefits. The flocked tip offers major control when it comes to application (no errant pigment anywhere!), and they make you feel like a soft teddy bear is using its paw to put on your makeup. The formulas inside aren't restricted to full-coverage mattes — they apply gloss just as beautifully.

Powder

Powder

You'd think that powder and lips don't go together, but the newest products prove otherwise. Many of them boast unusual formulas that transform into a cream once applied. They feel slightly . . . dusty at first, but then melt into a matte liquid texture. Because powder tends to have more longevity than liquid makeup, these lip colors leave durable stains behind, rendering reapplication unnecessary.

Peel-Off Stain

Peel-Off Stain

Sadly, these quirky Peel-Off products have gotten a bad rap. They require intense exfoliation before you apply — otherwise, they'll peel away chapped parts of your pucker, which could be painful. But when used correctly, they are awesome. The formulas are applied like a standard squeeze-tube gloss and impart rich pigment to your lips. However, the color dries (very unlike a gloss), allowing you to peel it away and reveal the longwear stain beneath. Learn how to DIY your own peel-off lip stain here.
