I've always kept my hair-washing routine pretty low key. Yes, shampoo and conditioner are a given, but anything beyond the basics leaves me stumped. I've definitely been guilty of reaching for products on offer in my local supermarket, and my bathroom shelves are stocked with classic brands like Pantene, Herbal Essences, and Alberto Balsam. While there's nothing wrong with that, my hair had been feeling a little lackluster of late, especially since I jumped on the "Gemini hair" trend.

After googling "products to make my hair shine," I found loads of hair oils, shine drops, and finishing creams to consider, but in all honesty, it sounded too high maintenance. I was tempted to try out the "reverse hair washing" trend — which is more about how you shampoo versus what shampoo you use — but I also need to keep things quick and easy. Plus, I live in a small flat, so "hair cycling" wasn't an option for me. So where to start? My shampoo and conditioner, of course.

Enter the chat: Function of Beauty's customizable hair booster range. Could this be the answer to saving my dry, tired hair? I decided to give it a try.

What I Like About the Function of Beauty Customisable Hair Booster

I immediately liked the simplicity of this product. When I first started looking at all the options, I was worried it wasn't going to be as straightforward as I originally thought, but actually, it includes just two steps. First, I picked a base. I went for shampoo fomulated for straight hair, as mine is naturally as flat as a pancake. Then, I opted for the Strengthen ($3), Shine ($3), and Thermal Protection ($3) boosters to help cater to my personal needs.

Each of the boosters includes different ingredients to help achieve the desired results. The Strengthen booster includes pea sprout, which the brand claims helps support natural elasticity; Shine uses amaranth extract to soften and protect the hair; and Thermal Protection includes sesame protein to shield hair against the damaging effects of heat styling. On top of the boosters, which are fragrance free, the base shampoo had a nice fruity scent that lingered long after washing it out.

The combination of these products definitely brought my hair back to life. I have a really nice shine back, and it feels silky smooth. I've also noticed that I have to wash my hair less often, going from three to four times a week to just once or twice instead.

How to Use the Function of Beauty Customizable Hair Booster

Each booster comes encased in a little pod that you pop open, so all I had to do was add them to the bottle of shampoo and shake for 10 to 15 seconds. Each booster box comes with two pods, so there's one for your shampoo and one for your conditioner. I loved having this option because it meant I could totally mix things up. Next time, I'll probably just add shine to the conditioner, for example.

What to Consider about the Function of Beauty Customizable Hair Booster

One thing to note about this product is the extra cost of the boosters. The products are slightly more expensive compared to drugstore options as you have to essentially buy more than one product. To keep prices lower, you could always opt for just one or two boosters instead of three.

While I've found that they definitely keep my hair healthy and happy, I do still add a heat-protection spray when using my hair dryer and hot brush, so they haven't completely removed extra products from my routine. Although, there is definitely less of a need for oils, masks, and conditioning creams, so when weighing up the pros and cons, it's worth it in my eyes.
