Sophie Turner's Bob Haircut in "Joan" Exudes Main-Character Energy

Change looks good on Sophie Turner. On Sept. 14, the actor was spotted on the set of her upcoming six-part drama "Joan" in Spain, smiling with a few crew members. The photos, obtained by Page Six, show Turner rocking an '80s style haircut, trading her usual waist-length hair and fiery red color for a platinum-blond blunt bob. The new cut fell just above her shoulders, which is an appropriate fit for her housewife-turned-jewel-thief character living out her crime-boss fantasy in 1980s London. Turner styled the look with bright red lipstick and a cobalt-blue bodysuit, fully delivering on the main-character energy.

Drawing inspiration from the real-life Joan Hannington, one of London's most notorious women criminals, a bold style like this was necessary to really sell the story. In fact, Turner's bob is just one of many historically accurate looks designed specifically for the show, along with uncomfortably backcombed hair, choppy layered lobs, and an ever-present red lip.

In television, most artistic decisions are made with intention. Hairstyles in particular carry important messages about the characters they represent. Historically, a blunt bob like Turner's — short and strong in nature — is meant to communicate a certain intensity. "Producers of movies oftentimes use this cut to convey strength, power, and hardness — an inability to break no matter what is going on in the world around them," Abra McField, a psychologist with a hair doctorate certification, previously explained to POPSUGAR. "When a woman takes her power back, she might go with a straight-edge cut with no softness and variations in lines because she wants to be taken seriously."

This seems especially fitting considering this is one of the first major Turner sightings following the news of her split from Joe Jonas. Check out her powerful haircut and see how Turner is embracing change.
